Each half carries 1000 individually pocketed springs. Wrapped separately, each spring compresses only where weight is applied, which is what gives the orthopaedic support its name — the mattress holds your spine in line rather than letting the heavier parts of you sink. It also means one person turning over is far less likely to wake the other.

Above the springs are layers of wool, memory foam and hypoallergenic filling. Wool is the quietly useful one here: it moves moisture away and helps the bed stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter without any special technology. The tension is medium.

The cover is a hand-tufted luxury damask with a quilted finish. Tufting pins the fillings in place so they cannot migrate into ridges and dips over the years. The borders are side-stitched for firmer edges, and turning handles are fitted so you can rotate it without a fight.
