Linen Fabric Universal Divan Base

A divan base on its own, upholstered in linen-look fabric. Buy it if your mattress is fine but the base under it is tired, or if you have bought a mattress separately and need something to put it on.

Universal means the base is a platform top — a solid, flat surface rather than a sprung one. A platform top gives a firmer overall feel because all the give comes from the mattress rather than the base, and it wears more evenly over time. It is also the right choice if your mattress is already soft and you do not want it softer.

Choosing your storage

The drawer configuration matters more than people expect, because it decides which sides of the bed you can open.

• No drawers — a plain base. Choose this if the bed sits in an alcove or against furniture.
• 2 drawers, same side — both drawers open the same way. The one to pick when only one side of the bed is reachable.
• 2 drawers, one either side — one each side, for a bed with clear access on both sides.
• Large end drawer — a single deep drawer at the foot. Good for bedding and spare duvets, and it needs clear floor space at the end of the bed.
• 4 drawers — two each side, the most conventional storage layout.
• 2 drawers + 2 continental — two full drawers plus two shallower ones at the head end.
• Slide storage — a pull-out platform rather than drawers, on the smaller sizes.
• End-opening ottoman — the whole base lifts on gas struts from the foot end, giving one large space under the entire bed. By far the most storage, and it needs clear headroom above and floor space in front to lift.

Measure before you choose a drawer option. A drawer that cannot open is worse than no drawer at all.
