On a platform-top base, every bit of give comes from the mattress. On a sprung-top base, the springs in the base work with the mattress, sharing the load. Two things follow. The bed feels softer and more forgiving overall, which suits people who find platform tops unyielding. And because the base absorbs some of the work, the mattress above it is under less strain and tends to last longer.

It is the more expensive option, and worth it if you are pairing it with a good mattress you want to protect, or if you simply prefer a softer bed. If you like a firm bed, the platform-top bases are the better match.
