Velvet Fabric Universal Divan Base

A universal divan base upholstered in plush velvet — the softest-looking of the base fabrics, and the one that reads as a piece of furniture rather than something to hide under a valance.

Universal means a platform top: a solid flat deck, so the mattress provides all the give. Firmer overall than a sprung-top base, and it holds its shape better over the years.

Worth knowing that velvet shows marks and finger tracks more readily than linen or leather-look. It brushes out, but if the bed is going in a child's room the leather-look version is the more forgiving choice.

Choosing your storage

• No drawers — plain base.
• 2 drawers, same side — both open one way, for a bed against a wall.
• 2 drawers, one either side — one each side.
• Large end drawer — deep drawer at the foot for bedding.
• 4 drawers — two each side.
• 2 drawers + 2 continental — two full plus two shallower at the head.
• Slide storage — pull-out platform on smaller sizes.
